Nationwide Auto Insurance

Company Name: Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company

History of the Company:
Founded in 1925 as a small Ohio auto insurance company for farmers, the official name was Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. The first policy was sold in 1926 and the company continued to sell to farmers and rural residents throughout Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Vermont and North Carolina until 1934 when they began selling to residents of metropolitan areas.

As the company grew, it decided in 1955 that the Ohio name was no longer appropriate since the insurance was available in more than twenty states, it found a new name – Nationwide Insurance. Through the years, Nationwide has added many other ventures outside car insurance to its business focus.

Mission Statement:

“Nationwide is on your side.®” This statement may be the mission statement but it is better known as the famous jingle from radio and television commercials that stays in your head forever.

Coverage:

Nationwide’s auto insurance is available for cars, motorcycles and boats. Not only does the company insure personal vehicles but also commercial car fleets and small business owners' cars. The commercial insurance division caters to both one car ownership and fleets of trucks. As an added bonus, the company offers more than three hundred online safety courses to assist businesses in training their staffs in the safe operation of company vehicles.

Like most mainstream auto insurers, discounts are offered for multi-vehicle policies and insured individuals who hold policies for both their car and home with Nationwide. Nationwide also offers every user and visitor to their site a car insurance quote online for free.

Statistics:

• Close to thirty-six thousand employees
• More than sixteen million policies in force
• Sixth largest auto insurer in the US

Special Features that Differentiate Company from Others:

• Teen Auto Insurance – while many companies offer insurance to teenage drivers, they in fact discourage insuring this age bracket by charging exorbitant premiums. Nationwide, on the other hand, advertises their Teen Auto Insurance program and in conjunction with the National Safety Council has created “NationwideSmartRide.com” to help parents when talking to their teens about safe driving and informing parents about how the teen brain behaves. The other side of the program is geared toward teens and learning how to drive in poor weather conditions, cell phone use in the car, and dealing with peer pressure.

• Free On Your Side® Reviews
• Nationwide Auto Watch is a unique website where the user can login to the site with his/her telephone number and actually see the progress on his/her damaged vehicle. Photos are available and time lines for repairs are available.
• Nationwide seems to be very customer oriented as it relates to the internet. Every aspect right from quoting insurance, buying car insurance, making a vehicle insurance claim, and watching the subsequent repairs is offered online.
• Accident Forgiveness Program – although this is now pretty standard with many insurers, albeit at increased premiums, Nationwide expands the benefit to teen drivers insured on a parent policy.
